Storing Wine, Should you put wine in the fridge?

With growing interest in fine wine and with more of us prepared to spend that little bit extra on a good vintage, demand for decent storage has been increasing over the years. There are many appliances on the market specifically designed for wine storage, so we thought we’d talk to you about some of the ones we believe are reliable and offer great value for money.

Why is it important to store wine correctly?

Wine reacts to its surroundings. By keeping bottles in the correct conditions, you’ll ensure the wine matures properly. Too warm and the wine will age faster; too cool and deposits may develop. A standard fridge temperature is actually slightly too cold to keep white wine.

Red or White?

Red and white wines require different storage temperatures. While white wine is best stored around 10-12°C, reds are best around 12-16°C. Top of the range coolers such as the Miele KWL 4712 Sed (see below) have independent temperatures within the unit so you can keep champagne on the bottom shelf at 6-8°, and your full-bodied claret at 18°C on the top shelf!
With adjustable electronic controls, precise temperature settings can be maintained. This model even has a built in vibration-free compressor, preventing vibrations from disturbing the sediment within the wine!

Humidity and cooling

Proper humidity is just as important as temperature; too dry and the corks will dry out; too damp, and mould could form. Superior cooler models will maintain the correct humidity, as well as keeping the air well ventilated. Some even have active charcoal air filters, which provide fresh air ventilation to prevent contamination of the wine.
Proper ventilation is vital. Fanned cooled refrigeration also ensures that, if you open the door, the fridge quickly recovers its interior temperature and any odours are excluded, so the wine isn’t tainted.

Shelf configuration

Entry-level models tend to have fixed shelving. Higher-spec models have shelves you can roll out, making it easier to retrieve and inspect your bottles. Shelves can also be adjustable – useful if you want to store extra bottles for a party – and can be made from wood or high-quality chrome.

Doors

Glass doors may let your show off your fine wine selection but they don’t tend to insulate as well as solid doors. If you want a glass door, be sure to check whether it’s UV-protected. This means the wine won’t be affected by sunlight.

Where to store it?

As with most fridges, you should try and keep them where the ambient temperature doesn’t fluctuate too much – so avoid the garage if you can. Wine fridges can cope with temperature changes but big fluctuations put extra pressure on the unit and can drastically reduce the life span of your appliance.

Environment and costs

Most of the wine fridges are A-rated. Annual costs for running a fridge are very reasonable: about £20 per year.
